Injury Prevention
More patients are asking us how they can stay “injury free” when participating in their sport and if they can perform exercises to maximise their performance in their sport. Whilst there are a multitude of tests/examinations that Physiotherapists can do, different “screening” or “profiling” methods have been developed.
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is one such method that identifies movement or strength deficiencies in how people move using seven specific tests.
The problems identified from the screen are used to create an individually tailored exercise programme that the individual must commit to perform on a regular basis.
It is hoped that once the exercises have been performed for a period, the individual or athlete will have greater movement efficiency, which will lead to improved performance and hopefully a decrease in injury risk.
The aims and benefits of FMS training system are to:
-Identify physical imbalances or weaknesses.
-Rehabilitate imbalances and strengthen weaknesses with simple corrective exercises.
-Improve functional and athletic performance.
-Help to reduce the potential for training and sports injuries.
Each person who undertakes the screen will receive a full written report (including photographs) and a written exercise programme to follow. We also have specific extra tests which we use in an effort to make the screen “sport specific”. This basically means that the screening requirements of a swimmer, would be different to that of a footballer for example, and we make an effort to recognise that in the areas that we look at during the screening.
The screen process takes approximately 1 hour and will be followed up with a 30 minute education session where the report is explained and the exercise programme is taught.
Ideally this will then be followed up in 4-6 months to review each individual’s progress.
